A big step forward has been announced by Google last days: Mobile first indexing is now used as default for all new domains!
What does that mean? Well, it means that it is definitely time for you to set up your mobile website ASAP.
Let’s get a bit into what that means technically, the journey up until this point and how you can keep up with the latest trend to develop your online business.
What does “Mobile-First Indexing” mean?
Mobile-First indexing means that all websites should have a mobile version that meets the standards Google throws out there. More and more people are accessing the web via mobile phones. Therefore, Google wants to create the best user experience possible.
The strategy used is by indexing the mobile version of you website first. Let’s take a glimpse to how Engadget defines it:
If you’re starting a new site, you’ll want to be sure its mobile version is polished and full-featured — that’s the version Google will use to parse the site’s structure and extract useful snippets.
Therefore, if you didn’t know about this, you should start building the mobile version of your business as soon as possible. Google is ready to index and serve the information from your mobile version.
Google’s Journey
Google started the process of first indexing back in 2016 when it announced the mobile-first indexing strategy. Due to the fact that they have seen a considerable growth in their mobile traffic, they have decided it is time to step up the game.
However, at the beginning of 2017, they only experimented with a few website that were not mentioned. But, by the end of the year, half of the pages on web were indexed by Google’s smartphone Googlebot.
Now, starting with the 1st of June Google makes mobile first indexing the default for all new domains! Therefore, this means it is time for you to go mobile. This is how you can do it!
